“What is our Why?”, “What is our style?”, “Who are we anyway?”
These were some of the questions the founder and some other people in Akatsuki asked them in the winter season in Tokyo in February 2016. It was still cold but the plum blooming was just about to start, and so was a great idea to emerge.
In the companies I have worked before the bonus systems sucked most of the time because they were creating an ill environment of envy and harmed the company culture. The main problem was that they were designed after the traditional “if … then” reward system.

Working at a Japanese company in Japan can be quite challenging. It is demanding and hard work is regarded as a beautiful thing. When I worked with Japanese companies, I mostly felt that a lot of people are not really happy in doing what they are doing. It seemed to me that work is experienced more as a duty and obligation, not something you could actually enjoy. And in fact only 44% feel “well-being” at their jobs in Japan (2016 Edenred-Ipsos Barometer).
